Making A Difference

Zones of Regulation

Self-regulation is something we are all constantly working on, whether or not we are conscious of it. We all encounter situations that 'test us' from time to time. If we are able to recognise when we are becoming less regulated, we are able to do something about it and manage our feelings and emotions. This comes naturally for some, but for others it is a skill that needs to be taught and practiced.

The ZONES are designed to help children recognise when they are in different zones as well as learn how to use strategies to change or stay in the zone they are in.

In addition to addressing self-regulation, the children have an increased vocabulary of emotional terms, skills in reading other people’s facial expressions, perspective about how others see and react to their behavior, insight into events that trigger their behavior, calming and alerting strategies, and problem solving skills.

The children learn that there is no such thing as a 'bad zone'. We can all enter the yellow and red zone. We help them to understand how to manage their emotions so that these zones do not become over whelming and have a negative impact on their day.

The children in Reception use 'The Colour Monster' book to introduce different feelings and emotions.
